Aikido

Japanese Aikido was founded by Morihie Ueshiba in 1942. Aikido translates to "The way of unifying life (with) energy" or "The way of energy through harmony". Aikido is primarily a grappling art in which attackers are neutralised with various types of throws or joint locks. Aikido techniques are intended to be implemented after first blending with the motion of an attacker,so that the defender may redirect the attacker's momentum without directly opposing it, thus using minimum effort. Basic Aikido movements are circular in nature. Aikido is different from other martial arts in that practitioners seek to defend themselves without causing injury to their attackers.

Hapkido

Korean Hapkido, "The way of harmonious energy" or

"The way of coordinated power" is a contemporary martial art with ancient roots. Hapkido shares with other Korean fighting systems a lineage which dates back roughly to the time of Christ. Along the way, the art now known as Hapkido has been influenced by Japanese and Chinese martial arts. Hapkido today is a multi- faceted martial art blending hard and soft techniques. Like traditional styles of Karate-do, "The way of the empty hand". Hapkido employs strong linear techniques such as strikes and kicks. Like Aikido or Aiki-JuJitsu, it also uses circular (soft) techniques, such as off-balancing or throwing, which re-directs an attackers energy to his/her disadvantage.

Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do literally means the art (do) of kicking (tae) and punching (kwon). Tae Kwon Do is a system of unarmed self-defense, in which practitioners use parts of their body as weapons. It is different from other martial arts in that it relies predominately on kicking techniques. These kicking techniques are performed in a uniquely quick, snapping manner, not found in other systems. Tae Kwon Do makes use of a very mobile, upright fighting stance that allows for quick action on the part of the fighter. The philosophy of Tae Kwon Do is that it is better to be quick on your feet rather than firmly rooted in one place.
